An island is usually inhabited by a group of humans, but what if cats dominate the island? That’s what happens on Aoshima Island, a small island in Japan that is nicknamed Cat Island.
The nickname has its own background. According to Catster website, the human population is far behind with only about 20 people in the age range of 50 to 80 years. Meanwhile, the cat population is more than 120.
There are some other interesting facts about the cat island. Instead of being curious, check out the explanation below!
Started As A Rat Hunt

This island in Ehime Prefecture was originally a fishing island where cats were rare. However, a few decades ago, fishermen intentionally brought cats on the island to hunt rats that ate their bait.
Since then, the cats have multiplied, causing the population to soar. Meanwhile, the human population has been declining due to various factors.
The cats are allowed to coexist with humans there. The locals fed the cats every day.
After that, there was a lot of word of mouth about this unique phenomenon on this small island. Domestic and foreign tourists began to be interested in meeting the cute cats in that place.
Not A Tourist Destination

Domestic and foreign tourists are welcome to play with the cats there. However, it should be underlined that the island is not a tourist destination. Therefore, visitors must respect and not interfere with the lives of the locals.
If you’re hoping to relax in a cafe or restaurant with an anabul aka fur child, you might be disappointed when you get there. There are no cafes, restaurants and supermarkets on Aoshima Island.
The travel route to the island is also quite difficult. According to the Setouchi website, visitors can only take a ferry to the island. In one day, there are only two scheduled departures.
Even so, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty around the island while feeding the cats there. Anabul lovers will definitely enjoy their visit to Cat Island.
Sterilization Program to Reduce Cat Population

While the cats are an attraction for both domestic and international visitors, the high cat population is still an issue. Citing the Catster website, the local government has castrated 10 cats through TNR(trap-neuter-return).
The purpose of the castration is not to exterminate the cats on Aoshima, but to control the cat population. If the population is controlled, the number of cats will be balanced and they can live a healthy life.
This program is not only carried out on Aoshima, but also on other islands. Japan has at least 11 other Cat Islands where the number of cats is very large. According to All About Japan, the other islands include Enoshima, Okishima, Sanagishima, Muzukijima, and so on.
